A majority of college-bound students gearing up for school will not consider buying a Mac laptop, a study reveals. Instead, students are gravitating toward affordable netbooks from a variety of manufacturers, according to Retrevo, a consumer electronics website, that conducted the study.

Retrevo says Macs are at the bottom of student wish lists this year. While 49 percent of students will buy full-sized Windows laptops, 34 percent will purchase netbooks. Bringing up the rear is Mac with only 17 percent of students saying they intend to buy one, the study shows.

The most affordable new Apple laptop I could find sells for $949 (white MacBook). Compare that to the 18 percent of survey participants who say they won’t spend a dime over $1000 for a laptop and Apple doesn’t look to be the big man on campus this year. A majority of penny-pinching students, 58 percent of them, said they plan on spending less than $750 on their back-to-school laptop.

Apple has been targeting the education market this year with a special promotion offering a free iPod Touch with every MacBook sold. Judging from Retrevo’s study the lure is not that effective. Apple’s promotion ends on September 8.

Cheap netbooks, some even under $200, may just be good enough for students tight on cash and already saddled with credit card and tuition debt. With long battery life, a variety of designs, these affordable mini-laptops give students more for their tight budgets.

While netbook sales are strong, Apple has been reluctant to enter the cheap ultraportable computer war. Speculation about such a device has been floating around for over a year now, but Apple execs blasted the idea of an Apple netbook back in March.

But Apple could have something else in mind for the education market. The Cupertino company is rumored to launch a tablet-sized device either this year or in early 2010, which could have broad applications for the education sector as well.

We might want to take the Retrevo study with a grain of salt considering it only polled 300 site visitors. And, personally, I’m not terribly surprised by its findings. Since when has Apple ever been the big man on campus when it comes to computer operating systems? If 17 percent of college-bound students actually do what they told Retrevo and buy a Mac, that’s actually pretty good news for Apple. Market research firm Gartner points out the Mac market share here in the United States is a paltry 8.7 percent. Plus, according to market research from NPD, Apple has its own bragging rights. It owns 90 percent of the over-$1000 PC market.

The benefits gained from having Ovi built into this new device are plentiful, from cloud storage, synched contacts, mail, media and more. Another smart move by Finnish firm is the Booklet’s integrated 3G capabilities, which will allow users to be connected pretty much anywhere, anytime, without a WiFi network.

The ratings were based on 11,560 support calls fielded by Rescuecom during the second quarter and adjusted to take into account the market share of each PC maker. Lenovo, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard held the third, fourth and fifth spot respectively in the PC reliability survey.

The study was released on the same day the University of Michigan and other organizations issued the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, which measures user satisfaction with products including cars and PCs. Apple topped the survey with a score of 85, followed by Dell at 75, and a three-way tie between Hewlett-Packard, HP’s Compaq brand, and Acer/Gateway, which scored 74.

Consumers want PCs that require minimal repairs and good support, so the calls provide a good snapshot of PC reliability, Milman said. Companies that provide high-quality components tend to rate higher, while bad components and bad support may force PC owners to call third-party repair companies.

“We review … a combination of how reliable the components are and how good the support is from the manufacturer,” Milman said. “Their quality has held up from the last study, but it will be interesting in two years once the machines age a little bit,” he said. Increased support calls for Asus products may help better evaluate the company’s support, Milman said.

Among the top five PC makers in the U.S., Apple has offered a steady stream of PCs with quality components and support services, Milman said.

“With the introduction of their Apple Genius [Bar] in retail stores, they are offering support that many other manufacturers aren’t offering,” Milman said. Apple’s margins on the Mac desktop and laptop PCs are much larger compared to competitors, so Apple can afford to offer free support, Milman said. Many Rescuecom technicians are certified by Apple to repair Mac computers, Milman said.

Rescuecom received more support calls for Dell and HP PCs, which were the top two PC vendors in the U.S. during the second quarter, according to IDC. Dell rated seventh in Rescuecom’s study, with 22.1 percent of the repair calls. Though HP and Dell held close market shares in PC shipments, Rescuecom received 18 percent more support calls on Dell PCs than HP.

Rescuecom established a baseline to rate reliability by balancing the number of support calls with the market share of PC vendors, Milman said. The study was not commissioned by PC makers, and the company has no support ties with PC makers.

NEW YORK  — There’s a saying as the nation pushes for cleaner electric cars: The United States will end up trading dependence on Saudi oil for dependence on Asian dell inspiron 6000 battery,dell inspiron 630m battery.

Most of the big players in advanced batteries - the ones used to power the cars of tomorrow - are from Japan, South Korea or China.

America’s battery industry is in need of a shock. Enter Stimulus.

As part of the nearly $900 billion economic lifeline, lawmakers plan on spending $2 billion in loan guarantees and grants for makers of advanced batteries. They don’t necessarily have to be U.S. companies that get the money, but they need to set up shop on American soil.

Industry observers have high hopes for the plan, but worry that the money won’t be doled out fast enough or that it will be eaten up by a few big players.

Stimulus money: Not chump change

The money involved may seem small by stimulus standards, but for the nascent high-tech battery business it’s serious cash.

Two billion is more money than what’s flowed into the sector from venture capital and private equity firms over the last four years combined, said Heather Daniel, a power storage analyst at the research firm New Energy Finance.

“It could be a significant boost,” said Daniel. “If there’s a little guy that’s got the technology, it could have big implications.”

Having a light and efficient battery is essential if cars are to move from current hybrids - which use battery power only for low speed driving - to plug-in hybrids where battery power is the only thing turning the wheels.

Getting the right battery is key to making plug-in hybrids commercial - current batteries are still a bit too heavy and a bit too expensive. (There may also be an issue with getting enough lithium - much of it appears to be concentrated in a few South American counties, but that’s another story.)

The company or companies that nail the technology are potentially set for big profits and big hiring sprees. And currently, while many foreign firms have manufacturing operations in the United States, most of those companies are not headquartered here.

Japan’s Panasonic, NEC, and GS Yuasa; South Korea’s LG; and China’s BYD are the main players in this market, and account for nearly all current lithium ion sales.

“The United States is alarmingly vacant from this list,” said Rob Wilder, manager of the WilderHill clean energy index, an investment fund. “It’s painful as a patriotic American to see just how far behind we are.”

That said, U.S. firms are not out of the game.

Companies like Johnson Controls (JCI, Fortune 500), Ener1 (HEV), Maxwell (MXWL), Valence (VLNC), and privately held A123 Systems are noted for innovative, advanced-vehicle battery technology, if not a huge amount of current sales.

General Motors is working with A123 Systems on the Volt, although it seems LG will make most of the initial dell inspiron 700m battery,dell inspiron 710m battery.

There’s also an array of smaller American startups that are scraping by while they search for venture capital funding.

Wilder said that for the stimulus money to be effective, it should be available to these smaller companies that might have good designs but lack lobbying power.

“They just don’t have the resources to get the money like GM or Ford, who came late to the game anyway,” he said.

What are companies’ eligibility requirements for this money, what projects will get funded, and over what period of time is what the industry wants to know, said Joseph Muscat, a clean tech director at the accounting and advisory firm Ernst & Young.

A spokesperson for the House subcommittee that wrote the battery portion of the bill said those specifics would be hammered out by the Department of Energy if and when the bill gets approved.

“Clearly, it’s a help,” said Muscat. “There are a lot of companies here, and it will be interesting to see how the technology plays out.”
