Crunchtime For Crunchpad? Prototype Tablets Due Soon

TechCrunch blog founder Michael Arrington says his Crunchpad web tablet is getting closer to becoming a reality, with prototypes due by month’s end. Arrington also told the San Francisco Business Times that he has formed a Singapore company, Crunchpad, Inc., to manufacture the device.

The touchscreen tablet, designed for web surfing, video chat, and light email use, is eerily similar to Microsoft’s failed “Mira” eHome wireless smart display, which PC World recently named one of the “10 Dumbest Tech Products So Far”.

The question for this morning is what the CrunchPad will have to do differently to avoid making such a list in the future? My suggestions:

1. Be superthin, like a legal pad.

2. Run for days without recharging and use a cordless recharger.

3. Have a great color touchscreen.

4. Android seems a good choice for an operating system.

5. Find a way to beat Amazon in the Kindle e-book business.

6. Find a way to (if necessary) beat Apple in the mediapad business.

7. Survive when dropped onto a wood floor in my house.

8. Sell for $99.95. Or not more than$199.95. I think the market is price-sensitive. This needs to be a brainless purchase.

I am not sure that accomplishing all those things will save what seems to be, essentially, a project driven by Arrington’s legendary ego, from some future “10 worst” list. But, it will help.

Speaking of the list, our June edition, included my own pick for dumbest product of all time, the Digital Convergence CueCat, a small scanner that was supposed to read barcodes added to newspaper and magazine ads and take you to the associated Web sites. It was backed by the Dallas Morning News, which gives you some idea why newspapers are in trouble. But, I digress.

Suit Over China’s Web Filter to Target Lenovo, Acer, Sony

A U.S. company will seek legal action against Lenovo, Acer, and battery-c-69_123.html”title=”" >Sony next week over their shipment in China of controversial software that the company says stole its programming code.

Solid Oak Software may also take action against other PC makers that have started shipping the software, a company spokeswoman said in an e-mail late Thursday. She declined to give details of the action, but the company previously said it might seek a U.S. court injunction to stop PC vendors from shipping the program.

The software, an Internet filtering tool that blocks pornographic and political content, copied files from Solid Oak’s own Internet content control product, according to the company.

In recent weeks China ordered domestic and foreign PC makers to bundle the software, called Green Dam Youth Escort, with all computers sold in the country. It postponed the requirement just hours before the original deadline this week, but said it did so only because PC makers needed more time to ship the program.

Lenovo, Acer and Sony have all started shipping the program despite the postponement. Lenovo is providing Green Dam pre-installed or on an enclosed disc for most of its computers that support the program, a spokeswoman said.

Sony is including a setup file for Green Dam on its machines that users can choose to activate or remove, a company spokeswoman said. An Acer representative confirmed the company is also including the program with new machines.

Acer and Lenovo were the world’s third- and fourth-largest PC vendors in the final quarter last year, according to IDC.

All three companies declined to comment on Solid Oak’s plans for legal action.

China says it mandated Green Dam to protect children from “harmful” information online. But critics and foreign industry groups have voiced concerns about the program ranging from free speech and user privacy to security and system stability. Users, however, can choose to remove the program.

Whether China will set a new deadline for PC makers to offer the software remains unclear.

Acer Pushes AMD Into Netbook Space

Advanced Micro Devices has quietly released a low-voltage chip that has made its way into a new netbook from Acer, forcing the chip designer into the netbook space.

The single-core AMD Athlon 64 L110 processor is being used by Gateway in the LT3103u netbook, which was announced earlier this week. This is AMD’s first chip to reach netbooks, which are laptops with small screens designed for basic tasks like Web surfing and word processing. Gateway is owned by PC maker Acer.

The low-voltage processor is a variant of the Neo chips that AMD has designed for thin and light laptops, which have larger screens and offer more functionality than netbooks. The Athlon 64 L110 chip runs at a clock speed of 1.2GHz, has 512KB of cache and draws about 13 watts of power.

Most netbooks today carry Intel’s Atom chips, with Via’s low-power Nano processor in a distant second place. AMD in the past has derided netbooks, saying that though the PCs were inexpensive, they didn’t offer full functionality.

So the sudden emergence of an Athlon chip in a netbook comes as a surprise, especially because AMD has repeatedly said it would not enter the netbook space. The company still maintains a stance of not being interested in netbooks, but a spokesman softened that rhetoric on Thursday.

“AMD has fully anticipated that our technology would eventually appear at the upper end of the netbook space,” said Steve Howard, an AMD spokesman. Though the chip was designed for ultrathin notebooks, AMD did not want to restrict the desire of PC makers to use it in different form factors, he said.

Gateway’s laptop can be defined as a prototypical netbook, but with better integrated graphics than typically found in Atom-based netbooks. The US$399 laptop has an 11.6-inch display, weighs about 3.14 pounds (1.4 kilograms) and measures about an inch thick. It includes AMD’s ATI Radeon x1270 integrated graphics and the RS690 chipset. The laptop is designed for Internet and basic applications like word processing, Acer America said in a statement.

AMD perhaps didn’t intend for the low-power chip to be in Gateway’s netbook, but it made its way there nevertheless, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research. Unlike Intel, which has specially designed Atom for netbooks, AMD does not want to design chips for netbooks.

If AMD had a choice, it would rather put the chip in more expensive laptops to extract better margins, McCarron said. The low margins of $400 laptops don’t help AMD financially, so the company may try hard to limit the chip’s usage in other netbooks, he said.

But the chip could be used in PCs or servers where power efficiency is a concern. For example, Intel’s Atom is now being used in servers, so AMD’s netbook chips could end up there as well, McCarron said.

China Stands by Web Filter Program Despite Protests

China said its deadline for Web filtering software to be distributed with PCs had not changed on Tuesday, despite growing protests from the U.S. government and Chinese Internet users.

Foreign and domestic PC makers are still required to ship the filter program with all PCs sold in China beginning July 1, the state-run China Daily said, citing an unnamed source in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

China first issued the mandate last month and has said the software is meant to protect children from pornographic and other “harmful” content online. But the program, called Green Dam Youth Escort, also blocks political content including Web sites that mention Falun Gong, a spiritual movement banned as a cult in China.

The mandate could escalate into a serious trade dispute if China actually bars foreign PC makers from selling computers without the software, said Simon Ye, a Gartner analyst. State media last week cited an unnamed official saying foreign PC makers like Dell might not be able to meet the deadline.

Some kind of compromise is much more likely before the deadline, said Ye. Barring sales by a company like Dell would disrupt China’s PC market and could trigger protectionist responses by the U.S., he said.

Hewlett-Packard and Dell were the second- and third-largest PC vendors in China in the final quarter last year, claiming over one-fifth of PC shipments in the country, according to IDC statistics.

Dell is still reviewing the government mandate, a company spokeswoman said, declining to comment further.

Resistance to China’s mandate has grown in the weeks since it became public. Representatives from multiple U.S. government offices met with Chinese officials last Friday to express concerns about the requirement to ship the software, said Susan Stevenson, spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Embassy officials representing the State Department, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Commerce Department met with officials at China’s MIIT and commerce ministry, she said.

The U.S. has asked China for a dialogue about the potential impact of the mandate on trade, effects on the free flow of information and “serious technical issues” raised by use of the software, Stevenson said.

Chinese Internet users have also mounted resistance to the mandate. Ai Weiwei, a well-known artist and dissident, was using Twitter messages on Tuesday to call for an Internet boycott the day of the government deadline. Ai urged Internet users not to go online on July 1 for work, email, news or other purposes.

“Do not give any explanation of your actions,” Ai wrote in his Twitter feed. “Make July 1 a day of commemoration for the Internet.”

Calls to China’s MIIT went unanswered Tuesday morning.

HP Introduces New Mini 5101 Business Netbook

Seeking to cement its lead in the business-oriented netbook space, Hewlett-Packard Co. today announced an updated Mini netbook.

Starting at $449, the Mini 5101 will come with a brighter backlit-LED screen, a larger, spill-resistant keyboard and a better-resolution 2-megapixel Webcam.

The Mini 5101 will also have a slightly faster Intel Atom processor, a new security feature and a higher-quality metal case than the current Mini 2140 (full review here), according to Carol Hess-Nickels, director of marketing for business netbooks at HP. The Mini 5101 will use Intel’s Atom N280, which runs at 1.66 GHz, instead of the 1.6 GHz N270 in the Mini 2140, released less than six months ago.

The 5101 will retain the Mini 2140’s spiffy anodized aluminum case, but add a magnesium metal bottom, said Hess-Nickels.

The flat, open key layout will have a MacBook-like look-and-feel, and will be slightly larger, at 95% of full-laptop-keyboard-size, than the 2140’s 92% size.

Generally considered the third-leading netbook vendor behind Acer Inc. and Asus Inc., HP is among a few vendors to explicitly target business buyers with its netbooks. The Mini 5101 will be HP’s fourth business netbook in less than a year and a half. It released the Mini 2133 in early 2008, and followed that up with the much-improved Mini 2140. HP announced a lower-end business Mini netbook in May, the Mini 1101. The Mini 5101 will retain many of the same features as the 2140 when it arrives in late July: 2.6-pound weight, a choice of Windows Vista, XP Home or Professional, Suse Linux Enterprise 11 or FreeDOS operating systems (for users to install whatever flavor of Linux they choose); hard-disk or solid-state disk drives with 3D DriveGuard, HP’s technology to protect data in case of drops; a 10.1 inch screen coming in either 1024×600 or 1366×768 resolutions; and a choice of fast-charging 4- or 6-cell Lithium-Ion batteries, the latter offering up to 8 hours of battery life, according to HP.

But if HP sees customer interest in HD video, it could use Nvidia’s Ion technology (explained here), as Lenovo Group Ltd. is doing.

“We have looked at Ion, an we continue to look at it every time we come out with a new product,” Hess-Nickels said. “Right now, it didn’t seem to be the right offering for our customers.”

Asked about the popularity of Linux, Hess-Nickels said the overall percentage of customers choosing Linux on HP netbooks, including business and consumer models, was “probably less than 10%,” though probably “higher, in the mid-teens” for business Mini models such as the 2133 or 2140.
